(February 12, 2008) — New York, NY —SonyBMG & SWAGRICULTURE present the next stage of the SAMPLOLOGY mixtape series, a mixed compilation of Hip-Hop and R&B heavyweights & the original blends that inspired their tracks. Each chapter highlights a select artist, producer or genre.

Recorded in the legendary Philadelphia International Records studios, DJ Parler along with hosts Kenny Gamble & Bunny Sigler present SAMPLOLOGY: The Philly Intl Chapter.

This chapter covers tracks from P.I.R., the 1971 label formed by pioneers of Philadelphia soul, Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff. Mirroring the Berry Gordy & Motown Records movement, Gamble & Huff brought such R&B greats as The O'Jays, Patti Labelle, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, Billy Paul to the musical landscape.

To be released during Black History Month 2008, this February project is a testament to the impact and inspiration that the P.I.R. catalog has had around the world. It is also a predecessor to Gamble & Huff's induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2008.

"This compilation isn't intended to substitute the actual CDs nor thier samples," says DJ Parler. "But to complement the albums and excite those in search of good music. I'm hoping that after hearing my mixes, people will want to dig deeper."

Additional SAMPLOLOGY Series include The K West Chapter, featuring material that Kanye West has appeared on as a producer and/or MC; The J Dilla Chapter, highlighting music produced by the late James Yancey a.k.a. J Dilla. And A Gangster Chapter, inspired by Jay Z's American Gangster soundtrack.

Donuts Don't Spoil

Last night Southpaw hosted the DONUTS ARE FOREVER 2 party, a tribute event for J Dilla and Lupus Research, organized by Rare Form

Hands down one of the best events I've been to...the energy, music and atmosphere were so right...Phonte from Little Brother hosted, DJs Brainchild, Bill Sharp, OP!, Akalepse and Houseshoes spun all night, and you could just feel the sincere joy from crowd every time the DJ dropped a new track...I met people that traveled from Cali, Detroit, Chicago and beyond to witness the annual Dilla celebration...really shows how Dilla's music & impact will continue to live on

Shout out to Derreck (Rare Form), J (Cornerstone), and Phonte for plugging the Samplology Dilla mixtape and passing them out on stage!

And to 6th Sense for the great footage

Where's the Music Ribbon

I was recently going back and forth on the IM with an old colleague...

Since leaving the record biz he's gone on to bigger and better things, working a 9 to 5 with a major telecommunications company. I told him not to bother coming back to the industry to which he replied "I don't know man, this music runs through my veins". I thought for a second and said "The music industry is cancerous---music is the cure---ain't no money in the cure, just the treatment"

We left it at that...

Muddy Waters

With the New Year comes email fwds from everyone and their mom about starting fresh, loving one another, and a slew other cliché resolutions. But this one stood out:

A group of alumni, all highly established in their respective careers, got together for a visit with their old university professor. The conversation soon turned to complaints about the endless stress of work and life in general.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went into the kitchen and soon returned with a large pot of coffee and an eclectic assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal - some plain, some expensive, some quite exquisite. Quietly he told them to help themselves to some fresh coffee.

When each of his former students had a cup of coffee in hand, the old professor quietly cleared his throat and began to patiently address the small gathering... ''You may have noticed that all of the nicer looking cups were taken up first, leaving behind the plainer and cheaper ones. While it is only natural for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is actually the source of much of your stress-related problems."

He continued...''Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In fact, the cup merely disguises or dresses up what we drink. What each of you really wanted was coffee, not a cup, but you instinctively went for the best cups... Then you began eyeing each
others' cups....''

Now consider this: Life is coffee. Jobs, money, and position in society are merely cups. They are just tools to shape and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not truly define nor change the quality of the Life we live. Often, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee that God has provided us... God brews the coffee, but He does not supply the cups. Enjoy your coffee!''

The happiest people don't have the best of everything, they just make the best of everything...

Posse Poppin'

I’ve been seeing a resurgence of posse cuts lately. Could these collaborations be a symbol of Hip Hop unification? Perhaps a sign of lazy MC’ing? Maybe a mark of great cross-market promotional strategy? Who knows…just thought I’d share two of my recent favs (click song titles to download)
